Life imprisonment too light for Oriire kidnappers — Oyo govt

The Oyo State Government has described the life sentence given to three people convicted over the Oriire school abduction as inadequate, though it will not appeal the ruling.

Commissioner for Information Dotun Oyelade told journalists in Ibadan that the government had expected capital punishment, calling the sentence “cold comfort” given the severity of abducting schoolchildren and teachers, according to Vanguard. He argued that those who concealed information about the kidnappers were as culpable as the perpetrators, but confirmed the state would respect the Federal High Court’s judgment.

Oyelade praised the court for a speedy trial and called for stronger anti-terrorism laws. He said security around schools has been reinforced through the Amotekun Corps and other agencies.
