The National Assembly has cut short its recess to reconvene and potentially shift the 2027 presidential election to February 13 to address Ramadan concerns.
The National Assembly has announced it will reconvene plenary on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, cutting short its recess amid indications that lawmakers may review the date fixed for the 2027 presidential election. Findings show the presidential poll could be shifted to February 13, 2027, from the February 20 date earlier announced by INEC.
In a notice signed by Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, lawmakers were directed to resume at 11 a.m., noting that “very crucial decisions” would be taken. “The Senate and House of Representatives shall reconvene plenary session at 11:00 am on Tuesday, 17th February 2026,” the notice read.
Sources said the session would provide legislative backing for INEC to address concerns over the election’s clash with Ramadan. “If all goes according to plan, the presidential poll date may be brought forward to February 13,” a Senate insider said, adding that the move is to ensure inclusivity and credibility in the 2027 elections.
