Lagos 2027: Coordination of endorsements for Hamzat sparks internal APC friction

The Lagos State APC is facing internal friction following a wave of top-tier endorsements for Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat as Governor Sanwo-Olu’s successor, sparking a debate over internal democracy and the exclusion of other administrative divisions.

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is experiencing early internal strain ahead of the 2027 governorship election following a series of high-profile endorsements for Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat. The momentum began on April 27, 2026, during a closed-door meeting at Lagos House, Marina, where Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu formally presented Hamzat as his preferred successor. This was swiftly followed by endorsements from the Governance Advisory Council (GAC) and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who reportedly backed Hamzat as a consensus candidate during a meeting in Abuja. A senior party source noted the weight of the Governor’s backing, stating: “The governor did not mince words at that meeting. He made it clear that Hamzat has been part of the system, understands governance deeply, and has shown loyalty over the years.”

Despite this powerful consolidation of support from the party hierarchy, including Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, the “top-down” approach has triggered a backlash from stakeholders concerned about internal democracy. Critics argue that the rapid, coordinated endorsements create the impression of a predetermined outcome, stifling a level playing field for other aspirants. Abdul-Azeez Olajide Adediran (Jandor), who recently withdrew from the race, had earlier insisted on a transparent process, stating: “The party will not adopt any consensus arrangement for the governorship ticket. There will be direct primaries where every aspirant will have the opportunity to test their popularity and acceptance among party members.” Similar concerns have been echoed by those who believe the party should prioritize inclusive representation across the IBILE administrative districts rather than rewarding long-term proximity to power.

The succession debate is further complicated by lingering agitations for the Epe Division, which remains the only district to have served a single gubernatorial term under former Governor Akinwunmi Ambode. While some party members advocate for continuity and experience, others warn that bypassing certain districts could lead to voter apathy or internal sabotage. A party insider highlighted the delicate balance required, noting: “Some people feel that after serving as deputy for two terms, there should be room for others from other districts within the party to aspire and contribute at that level. It is not necessarily about competence; it is about giving others a sense of belonging and participation.” As Dr. Samuel Mawuyon Ajose remains in the race, the APC leadership faces the challenge of managing these conflicting interests to maintain party cohesion before the 2027 polls.
