Ambassador Blessing Fubara Senior, a relative of the incumbent Rivers State Governor, has officially declared his intention to contest the state’s upcoming governorship primary under the Nigerian Democratic Congress, promising to serve only a single term if elected.
A fresh wave of political realignment has hit the oil-rich hub of Rivers State following the formal declaration of Ambassador Blessing Fubara Senior, brother of the incumbent Governor Siminalayi Fubara, to contest the state’s upcoming gubernatorial election. Speaking ahead of the primary elections organized by his newly adopted party, the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), the prominent politician and former All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain described himself as a highly competent, energetic, and fully prepared candidate. In a striking policy promise aimed at reshaping local power-sharing dynamics, Blessing Senior explicitly pledged that he would serve only a single four-year term in executive office if successfully elected by the state’s electorate.
The unexpected declaration introduces a fascinating domestic twist to the state’s hyper-volatile political landscape, which has been defined by long-standing battles for regional administrative control. Addressing party delegates and grassroots mobilization networks, the governorship hopeful lamented what he characterized as a severe economic decline and a painful loss of institutional dignity across the state’s various local government areas over recent years. To reverse this downward trajectory, Senior called on citizens and independent voters to join a collective and non-violent political “uprising” to wrestle power from deep-seated interests and firmly reclaim the state’s missing economic prominence.
The strategic move signals a growing fragmentation within established regional voting blocs as political actors position themselves ahead of the next major electoral cycle. Senior made his foundational motivations clear during his address, connecting his personal ambitions to a wider national push for governance accountability and structural equity. Affirming his readiness to challenge the established political order through the NDC platform, he stated: “I am addressing you today on the occasion of the Nigerian Democratic Party, Nigerian Democratic Congress Party primary elections across states of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
