Survivors of the Ngoshe mass abduction have recounted months of starvation, suffering and personal loss after being rescued from Boko Haram captivity in the Mandara Mountains.

Fresh details have emerged from survivors of the March 3 mass abduction in Ngoshe, Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State, where more than 400 women, children and elderly residents were seized by Boko Haram terrorists.

According to Daily Trust, troops of Operation Hadin Kai recently rescued 360 captives from the Mandara Mountains, ending more than three months of hardship in terrorist custody. The victims are currently receiving care at the Pulka Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp.

One survivor, Aisha Bukar, said the harsh conditions left lasting effects on her health.

“Throughout our stay, we survived on raw corn soaked in water, which we ate only once a day. That was how we lived for three months,” she said.

She added: “My stomach is not accepting cooked food now. My children are also having stomach ache after eating some of the food in the camp.”

Another victim, Hafsat Musa, described an even more heartbreaking experience.

“We were kept there without food or bathing. We all suffered hunger and starvation. Sadly, in the three months and two weeks I spent there, I lost my three children and my husband,” she said.

Musa revealed she was beaten during the abduction and only learned of her husband’s death after regaining freedom.

The rescue operation has brought relief to many families, but the testimonies paint a grim picture of the suffering endured by victims during one of the largest mass kidnappings recorded in Borno State in recent years.
