FG reaffirms commitment to ending child labour by 2030

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to eliminate child labour in Nigeria by 2030, as part of ongoing efforts to protect children and strengthen social welfare systems.

The Federal Government is doubling down on its promise to end child labour in Nigeria by 2030, restating its commitment through renewed policy direction and stakeholder engagement.

As Punch reports, government officials say the plan is part of a wider national agenda to protect children, expand access to education, and tackle the root causes that push minors into labour.

According to the report, authorities believe progress is already being made through coordinated action involving ministries, international partners, and child-focused development programmes aimed at vulnerable communities.

The FG noted that ending child labour will require more than policy statements, stressing the need for stronger enforcement, better social protection systems, and improved access to quality education across all regions of the country.

Officials also highlighted that Nigeria’s 2030 target aligns with global Sustainable Development Goals, which call for urgent action against child exploitation and unsafe working conditions for minors.

Still, challenges remain. Poverty, inequality, and gaps in enforcement continue to fuel the problem in many communities, making the target ambitious but necessary.

The government, however, insists it is committed to ensuring that every Nigerian child is in school and not in the labour force.
