The Federal Government has pledged technical training, capacity building and reintegration support for Nigerians set to return from Ethiopian prisons under a new prisoner transfer agreement between both countries.
According to a report by Vanguard, about 94 inmates are immediately eligible for repatriation after Nigeria and Ethiopia concluded arrangements allowing convicted citizens to serve the remainder of their sentences closer to home.
During a visit to Nigerian inmates at Aba Samuel Prison in Ethiopia, Foreign Affairs Minister Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu assured them that the government would provide opportunities to acquire skills and rebuild their lives after release.
She urged the inmates to embrace rehabilitation and avoid returning to activities that led to their incarceration. The Nigerian Correctional Service also confirmed readiness to receive and process the returnees, while the inmates’ representatives welcomed the agreement and promised good conduct upon their return.
