NiDCOM Chairperson Abike Dabiri-Erewa has demanded the release of 42 Nigerians detained without charge in Mozambique, citing concerns of selective, xenophobic profiling and mistreatment.
The Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has formally condemned the arrest of 42 Nigerians in Mozambique, labeling the incident as “distasteful and worrying” while demanding their immediate release or arraignment. In a statement released Sunday, Dabiri-Erewa highlighted that the individuals confirmed legal residents were allegedly singled out at a spare parts market in a move suggesting “xenophobic action,” as no formal charges have been filed and the Mozambican Attorney General is reportedly unaware of the case.
The Commission further alleged that some detainees were beaten and had belongings confiscated, with Dabiri-Erewa stressing that “it was disturbing that only Nigerians were reportedly singled out during the operation” and maintaining that “if any of the individuals had violated Mozambican laws, the appropriate step would be to arraign them before a court of competent jurisdiction rather than detain them without explanation.”
