The family of a Nigerian mechanic found dead in South Africa has demanded justice and the return of his body, alleging police involvement in the incident.
A Lagos-based businessman, Onyema Ekpenyong, has demanded justice over the death of his elder brother, Andrew Ekpenyong, whose body was reportedly found in a South African mortuary after police searched his residence.
Onyema said Andrew, a mechanic who relocated to South Africa in 2007, disappeared after receiving a phone call and leaving home. He alleged police later searched the house before his corpse was discovered in a government mortuary.
“The police said they saw him jogging, then he fell and died,” Onyema said, questioning the explanation. He alleged wounds and marks on his brother’s wrists suggested he was “handcuffed and beaten to death.”
The family called on Nigerian and South African authorities to investigate the incident, prosecute anyone responsible and assist in returning the corpse to Nigeria.
