Ex-IG joins Yobe governorship race

Former Inspector-General of Police Usman Alkali Baba has officially joined the Yobe governorship race, citing the failure of consensus talks among aspirants as the reason for his candidacy.

Former Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, has officially entered the Yobe State governorship race following the collapse of consensus talks among aspirants. Speaking to journalists in Damaturu on Sunday, Alkali confirmed he obtained his nomination forms after four other aspirants did the same, signaling a breakdown of earlier agreements intended to produce a single candidate. He noted that while he initially respected the consensus model, the lack of a voluntary agreement among the group necessitated his independent move.

Alkali explained that his decision to join the race follows a weekend of verification and consultation with party guidelines and relevant stakeholders in Damaturu. He emphasized that the consensus arrangement had effectively failed, as multiple candidates are now actively vying for the party’s ticket. Despite the breakdown, he urged his supporters to remain steadfast and committed to his ambition, regardless of changes to the primary election schedule.

When questioned about the possibility of stepping down in the future, the former police chief indicated a level of pragmatism. He stated that while he is currently focused on his campaign, he would consider supporting another aspirant if party leaders presented terms that he found acceptable. For now, he remains a key contender in the evolving political landscape of Yobe State as the primary process begins to heat up.
