El-Rufai support group hires US lobbyists amid ICPC trial

The El-Rufai Support Group Association has hired a Washington-based advocacy firm to push international attention onto the ICPC trial of former Kaduna governor Nasir el-Rufai.

Nasir el-Rufai’s supporters are taking their fight international. The El-Rufai Support Group Association, ERSGA, has brought on a Washington, D.C.-based advocacy outfit to push his case in front of American policymakers, as Vanguard reports.

According to the group’s strategic partnership director, Mohammed Salihu, the firm has been retained to engage US government officials, members of Congress, and pro-democracy organisations on what ERSGA calls a politically charged prosecution. The group insists el-Rufai is innocent and wants the international community watching closely as the case unfolds back home.

El-Rufai has been in ICPC custody since February, after the Kaduna State House of Assembly indicted him in 2024 over an alleged N423 billion fund diversion and money laundering scheme. He was later arraigned before a Kaduna High Court on an amended nine-count charge tied to fraud and abuse of office. His family has separately claimed his rights have been violated in custody, allegations the ICPC firmly denies, insisting it has stayed within the law throughout. With lobbyists now in the mix, the once-domestic legal battle is quickly turning into a diplomatic talking point, and Washington is the new stage.
