DisCos rake in N600bn despite persistent blackouts

Nigeria’s Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) generated N597.55 billion in revenue from consumers in the first quarter of 2026, according to data released by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

Nigeria’s Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) collected approximately N597.55 billion from electricity consumers in the first quarter of 2026, according to the latest commercial performance data released by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC). The figure, which covers January to March 2026, indicates that the 11 power distribution companies generated revenue close to the N600 billion mark despite persistent operational and commercial challenges within the electricity sector.

According to NERC’s commercial performance factsheets, the DisCos recorded N204.74 billion in revenue in January, N196.68 billion in February and N196.13 billion in March, bringing the cumulative first-quarter revenue to N597.55 billion. The collections translate to an average monthly revenue of approximately N199.18 billion during the three-month period.

The regulatory reports also highlighted varying levels of commercial efficiency among the 11 distribution companies. While some DisCos recorded improvements in billing and collection performance in certain months, the overall industry performance remained mixed, with notable revenue shortfalls reported across the sector. The findings underscore the continuing challenges facing Nigeria’s power industry despite efforts to improve service delivery and revenue generation.
