Assistant Superintendent of Police Usman Nuhu has been arrested and transferred to Abuja for disciplinary proceedings following a viral video showing the extrajudicial killing of a restrained suspect, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun, Delta State.
The Delta State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Usman Nuhu for the alleged extrajudicial killing of 28-year-old Mene Ogidi in Effurun on Sunday, April 26, 2026. The arrest followed the circulation of a disturbing viral video on Tuesday, which showed a police officer in mufti shooting a suspect who was sitting on the ground with his hands tied behind his back. Delta State Police spokesperson, Bright Edafe, stated that the command took immediate action upon viewing the footage, ensuring the officer was apprehended and subsequently transferred to the Force Headquarters in Abuja for rigorous disciplinary proceedings and criminal investigation.
Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Placid, further clarified the circumstances leading up to the fatal encounter, identifying the deceased as Mene Ogidi. According to the police, Ogidi had been apprehended at the Benin Motor Park along the Warri–Sapele Expressway by members of a transport union while allegedly attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol and four rounds of live ammunition. “Preliminary reports indicate that operatives attached to the Effurun Area Command responded to credible information from Benin Motor Park along the Warri–Sapele Expressway regarding a suspect apprehended by members of a transport union while attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol with four rounds of ammunition,” Placid noted.
While the police maintain that the deceased was caught with illegal firearms, the execution-style nature of the killing while the suspect was in custody has sparked widespread condemnation across the country. Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu has reportedly ordered a full-scale investigation into the conduct of the operatives involved, emphasizing that the Nigeria Police Force has zero tolerance for human rights abuses and extrajudicial actions. As ASP Usman Nuhu faces internal disciplinary measures in Abuja, civil rights groups have called for a transparent trial in a court of competent jurisdiction to ensure accountability for the death of the 28-year-old.
