Delta Police accused of shielding ‘evil’ officer after viral extrajudicial killing

Activist Efemena Umukoro has accused the Delta State Police Command of shielding ASP Nuhu Usman, alleging the officer extrajudicially murdered a handcuffed suspect to silence him and protect a documented history of criminal misconduct.

The Delta State Police Command is facing intense scrutiny following allegations that it deliberately aided and abetted the criminal activities of ASP Nuhu Usman, an officer accused of the extrajudicial murder of a bound suspect. Efemena Umukoro, the interim Delta State Coordinator of the Social Patriotic Youths Initiative and National Secretary of the Urhobo Progress Union (UPU), leveled these charges following the controversial killing of Mene Ogidi in Effurun. Ogidi was shot dead by ASP Usman, an officer attached to the Area Command in Effurun, despite appearing in a viral video handcuffed and pleading for his life.

Umukoro, speaking during an interview on News Central TV on Saturday, described the incident as a calculated move rather than an accident. He alleged that ASP Usman gunned down the suspect to “kill the line of investigation” because the deceased possessed sensitive information regarding the officer’s past operations. The activist characterized Usman as an “evil” that the police hierarchy failed to address despite a known history of corruption and misconduct. He noted that the suspect had been seen in the viral footage promising to lead officers to a specific location in Sapele before he was fatally silenced.

The activist further detailed the geographical context of Usman’s previous postings to support his claims of a cover-up. “Nuhu worked in Jesse previously; Jesse has a close proximity to Sapele,” Umukoro explained, suggesting that the officer’s familiarity with the region was tied to his alleged criminal interests. The killing has sparked nationwide outrage, with civil society leaders now demanding a full independent inquiry into how an officer with a documented history of misconduct was allowed to remain in active service and continue his alleged “weaponisation” of the police force.
