Civil society group petitions CJN, NJC over Justice Lifu’s ruling deregistering ADC, other opposition parties

A civil society group has petitioned Nigeria’s Chief Justice and the NJC demanding an investigation into Justice Peter Lifu over a controversial ruling that deregistered five opposition parties amid allegations of judicial misconduct.

A judge is now under fire — and the petition has gone straight to the top.

Sahara Reporters reveals that Tap Initiative for Citizens’ Development has petitioned Chief Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun and the National Judicial Council, demanding disciplinary action against Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court, Abuja.

The group alleges Lifu delivered a judgment deregistering ADC, Accord Party and three other opposition parties despite an active Court of Appeal stay order on the same matter.

With 2026 off-cycle elections and 2027 general elections approaching, the group warns the ruling threatens millions of voters’ democratic rights.

Justice Lifu and the NJC are yet to respond.
