Nigeria’s worsening security crisis has prompted a strong response from the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), which has declared June 14, 2026, a nationwide “Black Sunday” in memory of victims of terrorism, banditry, kidnappings and other violent attacks.
As Daily Post reports, CAN said the symbolic observance is intended to draw national attention to the growing loss of lives across the country and the urgent need for decisive action from government authorities. The association also announced a three-day prayer programme scheduled for June 12 to June 14, calling on Christians nationwide to seek divine intervention amid the security challenges facing the nation.
But CAN insists that prayers alone are not enough. According to the group, authorities must match words with action by tackling insecurity more aggressively. The association called for the declaration of a state of emergency on insecurity, the establishment of state police, and the unconditional release of kidnapped victims still being held by their captors.
The move reflects growing frustration among religious leaders and citizens alike as attacks, abductions and killings continue to make headlines across the country. For CAN, “Black Sunday” is not just a day of mourning it is a call for urgent, meaningful action to restore safety and public confidence.
