Bandits kill Zamfara LG officials for funding rival terrorist group

Two local government officials in Zamfara State have been killed by bandits amid allegations they were involved in payments to the Lakurawa terrorist group.

According to reports by Punch Newspaper, the victims — councilor Habibu Jangebe and Director of Planning Jamilu Sani — were allegedly abducted 10 days earlier before being murdered. Sources claimed the officials were used to deliver monthly payments to Lakurawa militants as part of efforts to shield communities from attacks.

However, Talata-Mafara Local Government Chairman Yahaya Yari strongly denied the claims, insisting authorities do not negotiate with terrorists.

The killings have heightened tensions in the area, with reports that bandits also threatened more officials as insecurity continues to plague parts of northwestern Nigeria.
