According to Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, former Labour Party vice-presidential candidate, he joined Peter Obi’s 2023 presidential ticket out of sympathy rather than full ideological alignment, Punch Newspapers reports.
Speaking in a Symfoni interview, Baba-Ahmed said Obi approached several prominent politicians who declined, prompting him to step in as a “volunteer for Nigeria.” He stressed he respects Obi but remains politically independent and not controlled by him. He also noted internal party crises are not enough justification for constant defections.
Baba-Ahmed recently moved to the PRP, further distancing himself from the Labour Party structure. Headlines: “I joined Obi ticket out of sympathy — Baba-Ahmed”; “Baba-Ahmed opens up on 2023 Labour Party deal”; “Ex-LP running mate clarifies political independence.” Punch report
