The Nigerian Army has dismissed viral reports claiming that more than 40 soldiers were killed during recent terrorist attacks in Borno State, describing such allegations as “misleading” and based on unverified information. In a formal rebuttal issued on Saturday, March 7, 2026, the military authorities clarified that the reports, which initially gained traction via Sahara Reporters, failed to provide an accurate account of the tactical situation on the ground. The Army emphasized that its personnel remain committed to their mandate and that the figures being circulated do not reflect the reality of the recent engagements in the Northeast theater of operations.
Lt. Col. Sani Uba, the Media Information Officer for Operation Hadin Kai, stated that the incident in question involved remnants of Boko Haram fighters who had been scattered during recent successful offensives in the Sambisa Forest. According to the military, these insurgents regrouped in a desperate attempt to regain relevance by targeting multiple communities under the cover of darkness. “The attacks on multiple communities occurred when remnants of Boko Haram terrorists, who had earlier been dislodged from the Sambisa Forest during sustained offensive operations by troops, regrouped and launched coordinated night attacks from multiple directions,” Uba explained, noting that the soldiers effectively stood their ground.
The Army further criticized the spread of “distorted” narratives, arguing that they undermine the morale of the troops and the overall security effort in the region.
