Senate President Godswill Akpabio has warned politicians against politicising Nigeria’s worsening insecurity, urging national unity and calling for urgent action to strengthen the country’s security framework.
According to The Nation Newspaper, Akpabio spoke during Tuesday’s plenary as the Senate resumed from recess, describing the recent Oyo school kidnapping as a national tragedy. He led lawmakers in a minute’s silence for victims, including slain teachers and a child, and expressed deep concern over the continued abductions across the country.
Akpabio directed the Senate leadership to fast-track arrangements for a National Security Summit to review existing strategies and propose stronger measures. He stressed that while Nigeria faces serious security challenges, exploiting them for political gain is unacceptable and counterproductive.
