Serious internal friction has rocked the Imo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) after a prominent legislative aspirant, Ezechukwu Obinna, vehemently protested the outcome of the party’s internal selection process, alleging a blatant imposition of an undemocratically selected candidate. Obinna, who aggressively campaigned to clinch the ruling party’s ticket for the Ahiazu-Mbaise Constituency seat in the Imo State House of Assembly ahead of the 2027 general elections, accused the state’s party leadership of completely sidelining legitimate contenders. The politician stated that party administrators abandoned all democratic standards by handpicking a candidate behind closed doors, completely ignoring those who spent heavy resources driving grassroots mobilization campaigns.
The deep-seated resentment within the ruling party became public after Obinna released a widely circulated protest video detailing how the party’s leadership orchestrated a systemic breach of internal trust. The aggrieved politician revealed that he single-handedly injected massive capital into his localized structural apparatus and general welfare logistics to help keep the party viable in the region, arguing that it is a severe administrative injustice to be discarded without a transparent ballot. Giving a clear financial layout of his losses, the frustrated politician stated: “I cannot spend over a hundred million naira just to be discarded in this manner because I’m in APC. This is ridiculous. This is unacceptable by me!”
According to Obinna, the administrative handling of the expression of interest and nomination forms by the state executives was deliberately deceptive, as multiple aspirants were induced into purchasing expensive tickets under the false pretense of an open, transparent contest. The legislative hopeful noted that six separate aspirants from the Ahiazu-Mbaise axis stepped forward to buy the regulatory compliance forms at a premium cost exceeding ₦10 million each after receiving explicit, official assurances that an open primary election would be conducted across the constituency’s designated wards. “We were six aspirants that purchased form from Ahiazu-Mbaise and we spent over 10 million naira each in processing the forms. The party gave us hope that there would be an open primary,” he explained, maintaining that the sudden announcement of an engineered candidate without any formal voting or cross-aspirant consultation represents an institutional betrayal that could fracture the party’s regional stability.
