FG to let reporters join troops during military operations

Nigeria’s Federal Government is considering a plan to embed journalists with military units during select operations to improve security reporting and public trust.

Nigerian journalists could soon be getting a front-row seat to military operations. Defence Minister Christopher Musa revealed the proposal at a National Security Summit hosted by the Nigeria Union of Journalists in Abuja, speaking through his aide, Rear Admiral Olusanya Bankole, Punch reports.

Musa says the media now plays a key role in modern security efforts, where shaping public perception matters almost as much as winning on the battlefield. The plan would deepen cooperation between journalists and security agencies, boost transparency, and rebuild public confidence in the institutions.

With insurgency still raging and limited access to conflict zones fueling rumors, the move could change how Nigerians get their security news.
