Tinubu hands Customs CG another six months — here’s why

President Tinubu has approved a second tenure extension for Customs Comptroller-General Adewale Adeniyi, adding six more months to his stay in office until February 2027 to complete key reforms and ensure a smooth leadership succession.

If you thought Adewale Adeniyi was on his way out the door at the Nigeria Customs Service, think again. Daily Post reported that President Bola Tinubu has handed the Comptroller-General another six months in office, his second extension since 2023.

The extension was announced on Friday in a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, noting that Adeniyi’s first tenure extension was due to expire on August 1, 2026, but Tinubu approved an additional six months to enable him to complete key reforms within the Customs Service.

The reason for the extra time? Unfinished business. Onanuga said the extension was granted “to enable him to consolidate the implementation of the National Single Window and ensure an orderly succession in the service.”

The transition period, however, comes with a clear to-do list. During the six months, Adeniyi will work with the Nigeria Customs Service Board to oversee critical personnel matters, including the promotion of eligible officers to the rank of Comptroller of Customs and the mandatory retirement of officers who have clocked 60 years of age or served 35 years.

Adeniyi joined the Nigeria Customs Service after graduating from Obafemi Awolowo University in the late 1980s, rose steadily through the ranks, and was appointed Comptroller-General by President Tinubu in June 2023.

The extension is the second time Tinubu has pressed pause on a leadership transition at the service, having first extended Adeniyi’s tenure by one year in 2025.
