Kwara State has filed criminal defamation charges against former Senate President Bukola Saraki over a social media post alleging Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq lacks a secondary school education, with the case adjourned to July 3.
Old political rivalries are now playing out in court. Kwara’s government has slapped former Senate President Bukola Saraki with criminal defamation charges, accusing him of falsely claiming on Facebook and X that Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq never finished secondary school, ICIR reports.
Prosecutors say the post used insulting language designed to provoke unrest, violating the state’s penal code. Saraki skipped Wednesday’s arraignment, prompting prosecutors to push for a bench warrant — but his lawyer fired back, arguing the case belongs in Federal High Court, not state court, and disputing whether Saraki was even properly served.
After a tense two-hour recess, the judge granted an adjournment. The matter returns to court July 3.
