Floyd Mayweather Jr. is facing two felony charges in Las Vegas after prosecutors allege he wrote a $200,000 check with insufficient funds to buy a luxury watch, adding to a growing pile of legal and financial troubles for the retired boxing champion.
Floyd Mayweather Jr. built his fortune and nickname on being “Money,” but a Las Vegas courtroom might soon test that reputation. The 49-year-old former boxing champion is facing two felony charges over allegations he wrote a bad check to score a luxury watch.
Court records show Mayweather was charged in April with theft and drawing and passing a check without sufficient funds with intent to defraud. Prosecutors in Clark County allege he wrote a $200,000 check through Wells Fargo in December 2024 to luxury resale store Gold and Beyond, despite not having enough money in the account to cover it.
According to Tribune, Mayweather skipped his scheduled appearance in Las Vegas Justice Court on Monday, with an attorney standing in for him instead. The case now heads to a September hearing. According to CNN, neither his attorney nor his representatives responded to requests for comment.
This isn’t Mayweather’s only brush with legal drama lately. He’s also been sued in New York over unpaid rent on a Manhattan apartment, tangled in financial disputes with several jewelers, and has a separate fraud lawsuit pending against a former business manager.
None of it seems to be slowing him down in the ring, though. Mayweather had been gearing up for a “Battle of the Legends” exhibition bout in Athens on June 27. Still, with prosecutors pushing forward, a conviction could carry real consequences for the unbeaten five-division world champion.
