Nigeria records 280,000 infant deaths yearly — Expert

Nigeria loses nearly 280,000 newborns annually, making it the world’s second-highest contributor to neonatal deaths, according to a leading paediatric expert.

Nigeria is haemorrhaging newborn lives at an alarming rate — 280,000 babies dying within their first 28 days every single year, reports Punch.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Centre for Newborn Health Research and Innovation (CeNHRI) in Ado Ekiti, consultant neonatologist Olufunke Bolaji said the heartbreaking reality is that most of these deaths are entirely preventable. Prematurity, birth asphyxia, and infections are the primary culprits — all treatable with skilled care.

The Ekiti State-backed centre, supported by the Gates Foundation, aims to bridge the dangerous gap between medical knowledge and frontline practice through simulation-based training and research.
