Nigeria’s ambassador-designate to Mexico, Reno Omokri, has denied claims that Mexico rejected his appointment, blaming the delay on World Cup-related administrative bottlenecks instead.
Reno Omokri wants everyone to relax about the “rejection” rumours.
Nigeria’s ambassador-designate to Mexico took to Channels Television’s Politics Today to shut down reports that the Mexican government had snubbed his appointment, according to Daily Post.
His explanation? Blame the World Cup. “Mexico has not rejected me. Not at all. You should understand that Mexico is right now hosting the World Cup, along with the United States of America, and all of their focus is on that,” he said.
According to Omokri, he’s far from the only diplomat stuck in limbo. “Most of us ambassadors, have not resumed. So, I’m not the only one. A lot of my colleagues are in my situation, but it’s okay. These things happen.”
He also took a swipe at critics pushing the rejection narrative, framing it as political noise rather than fact: “The opposition will always say things like I have been rejected. We do not work on the basis of the opposition. We work on the basis of reality.”
Omokri used the same interview to take a jab at the opposition’s 2027 chances too, questioning how a candidate who’s “been in three political parties in six months” could realistically challenge President Tinubu’s political consistency.
For now, his Mexico City desk stays empty — but according to him, that’s just World Cup logistics, not diplomatic cold shoulder.
