President Bola Tinubu says democracy cannot thrive without security, highlighting record defence spending, increased recruitment of security personnel and renewed efforts to protect Nigerians.
President Bola Tinubu used his Democracy Day address to send a clear message: without security, democracy cannot truly flourish.
According to Daily Trust, the President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property, insisting that public safety remains at the heart of Nigeria’s democratic progress.
“Democracy without security is a mirage. That is why this administration declared a security emergency and approved the recruitment of more than 50,000 new police officers and thousands of military recruits,” he said.
Tinubu’s remarks came as the nation marked another Democracy Day amid persistent security challenges in several parts of the country.
The President also paid tribute to Nigerians who fought for democratic governance, describing them as heroes whose sacrifices paved the way for the freedoms citizens enjoy today.
“Today, we honour the resilience of Nigerians who refused to surrender their faith in freedom, and the courage of those who stood firm against intimidation.
“We pay tribute to patriots who endured persecution, imprisonment, exile, and even death so that future generations could enjoy democracy,” he said.
Tinubu extended his appreciation to labour leaders, journalists, civil society activists, students, women, professionals, politicians and members of the armed forces who contributed to Nigeria’s democratic journey.
“I salute labour leaders, journalists, activists, students, women, professionals, political leaders, and soldiers, both those who have passed and those still with us, for their patriotic contributions,” he added.
