President Bola Tinubu has declared a nationwide security emergency as his administration ramps up efforts to tackle terrorism, banditry and kidnapping across the country.
Speaking during his June 12 Democracy Day broadcast, Tinubu announced the recruitment of more than 50,000 new police officers alongside thousands of military personnel to reinforce security operations nationwide.
The president acknowledged the recent abduction of dozens of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo and Borno states, describing their safe return as a top priority for his government.
“Democracy without security is not solid enough,” Tinubu said, stressing that stronger security institutions are critical to protecting lives and sustaining democratic gains.
He also revealed that the 2026 budget earmarks a record N5.41 trillion for defence and security, pledging that his administration remains committed to doing more to safeguard Nigerians.
According to Peoples Gazette, the announcement comes amid growing concerns over persistent attacks, kidnappings and other security challenges in several parts of the country.
