Federal government declares June 12 public holiday in honour of Democracy Day

Nigerians will enjoy a public holiday on Friday, June 12, as the Federal Government sets aside the day to commemorate Democracy Day.

According to The Nation, the announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, through a statement signed by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani. The government described June 12 as a landmark date that honours the courage, resilience and sacrifices of Nigerians who fought for democratic governance.

Tunji-Ojo reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to democratic principles, including the rule of law, transparency, accountability and inclusive governance. He also assured citizens that security agencies would continue working to protect lives and property nationwide.

The minister urged Nigerians to use the holiday for reflection, national unity and renewed commitment to strengthening the country’s democratic institutions. :::
