Pastor William Kumuyi has shut down speculation that he plans to hand over Deeper Christian Life Ministry to any of his children.
Speaking during a church service, the Deeper Life founder said leadership in God’s kingdom is not a family inheritance and insisted that the church belongs to Jesus Christ alone.
According to a report by Vanguard, Kumuyi was responding to rumours that one of his sons could eventually succeed him as head of the ministry. The veteran cleric said God, not family ties, would determine who leads the church in the future.
“God will choose, and God will tell who is to have the kingdom,” he said.
Kumuyi also pointed to biblical figures such as Peter, Paul and John, noting that they did not pass church leadership to their children.
The remarks are likely to fuel further discussion about succession plans in some of Nigeria’s largest churches.
