Bandit leader explains why General’s wife remains captive

A notorious bandit leader has claimed he withheld the release of a retired general’s wife to prevent security agencies from claiming success, while laying down fresh conditions for peace talks.

A dramatic twist has emerged in the abduction of retired Major General Abubakar Rabe and his wife, Hajiya Amina Abubakar, with notorious bandit kingpin Kachalla Muhammad claiming he deliberately suspended plans to release one of the captives.

According to Daily Trust, the retired military officer and his wife were kidnapped on May 30, 2026, after gunmen ambushed their vehicle along the Marabar Musawa–Kafinsoli road in Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State.

In a viral audio message, Kachalla said he had initially agreed to free Hajiya Amina but backed out after security agencies intensified operations in the area.

“I had promised the General that I would release his wife, but the deployment of security personnel in the area made me change my mind,” he said.

The bandit leader also expressed frustration over the arrest of individuals he described as his associates, warning that the development had complicated efforts at dialogue.

Kachalla’s Demands

  • Release of three persons allegedly in government custody
  • Return of cattle reportedly seized during security operations in Jikamshi
  • Conditions he claims could open the door to peace and end attacks in the area

Despite the threats, the Katsina State Government insists security agencies are making progress.

Commissioner for Information and Culture, Dr. Bala Salisu Zango, said Governor Dikko Umaru Radda had directed security agencies to prioritise the rescue mission.

“The way this attack was carried out suggests it was carefully planned and specifically targeted. This has influenced the government’s response strategy. Security agencies are working around the clock, deploying intelligence and technology to locate the victims and secure their release,” the statement read.

For now, the fate of the retired general and his wife remains uncertain as security forces continue rescue efforts.
