Thailand has donated 12 metric tonnes of rice worth $22,000 to help tackle worsening food insecurity in Nigeria, particularly in the conflict-affected North-East.
According to Nairametrics, the donation was handed over to the World Food Programme (WFP) in Abuja for distribution to vulnerable communities in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states.
Thai Ambassador to Nigeria, Thirapath Mongkolnavin, said the contribution reflects Thailand’s commitment to supporting humanitarian efforts in regions facing severe food shortages. The country had earlier provided $10,000 through the Nigeria Humanitarian Fund managed by the United Nations.
The donation comes as food security concerns deepen across Nigeria. Estimates from PwC and the FAO suggest that up to 34.7 million Nigerians could face acute food insecurity in 2026, driven by conflict, economic pressures and climate-related disruptions, Nairametrics reported.
