Former SGF Babachir Lawal says he may vote for Omoyele Sowore in the 2027 presidential election while ruling out support for the APC, ADC and NDC after resigning from the ADC.
Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has said he may consider voting for Omoyele Sowore in the 2027 presidential election, while ruling out support for the All Progressives Congress (APC), the African Democratic Congress (ADC), and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). Lawal made the remarks during an interview with TVC shortly after announcing his resignation from the ADC, citing alleged irregularities in the party’s presidential primary that produced Atiku Abubakar as its candidate.
Speaking on the political landscape ahead of the election, Lawal dismissed suggestions that a potential Peter Obi-Rabiu Kwankwaso ticket would necessarily sway his support, saying he was dissatisfied with the leading contenders. “I found myself between the devil and the devil, the other side is the devil. Whatever I choose, I end up with the devil, meaning that as bad as Bola Tinubu is now, Atiku will be a worse president,” he said. Lawal, however, stressed that his criticism of both Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Atiku should not be interpreted as an endorsement of any other candidate, adding: “It doesn’t mean I have to support anybody. I have retired from politics; I am not canvassing for anybody.”
The former SGF said he would still exercise his constitutional right to vote when the time comes, although he has yet to settle on a preferred candidate. “I have one vote to myself when the time comes. I might even vote for Sowore; there are other guys coming up who I believe would handle Nigeria better,” he added. Lawal further disclosed that he had already ruled out supporting three major political parties, saying: “At least, I’ve made a choice to eliminate. I have eliminated APC, now I have eliminated ADC and I can tell you categorically that I have eliminated NDC.”
