Heavily armed bandits have launched a fresh morning assault on the Dan Gulbi community in Sokoto State’s Tureta Local Government Area, killing at least 20 people and burning homes just two days after a similar raid claimed 17 lives.
A devastating security crisis is unfolding in the Tureta Local Government Area of Sokoto State after heavily armed bandits launched a brutal secondary assault on the Dan Gulbi community on Tuesday morning. The fresh invasion comes barely 48 hours after a similar, highly destructive raid on Sunday left 17 people dead, including several families who had traveled to the village for festive Sallah celebrations. According to terrified local residents, the attackers rode into the agrarian settlement in large numbers on motorcycles at approximately 8:00 a.m., opening fire indiscriminately on defenseless villagers and throwing the entire region back into immediate panic.
The scale of the latest attack has completely overwhelmed local communities, with early assessments indicating a sharp rise in casualties. Sources on the ground allege that no fewer than 20 people were systematically gunned down during the Tuesday morning massacre, while multiple residential homes were intentionally set ablaze and dozens of villagers remain unaccounted for in the surrounding wilderness. Mourning survivors recalled that the armed gang boldly remained in the village for several hours, targeting residents who had gathered under local shade trees before spreading out to sack the neighborhood. “They came and started shooting at us. People ran in different directions to save their lives,” a displaced resident stated under the condition of anonymity.
The double-pronged offensive represents a terrifying escalation for the Dan Gulbi community, which had only just begun burying the victims of Sunday’s initial raid, during which a convoy of over 150 bandit motorcycles systematically looted 20 commercial shops and claimed 17 lives. The continuous, unhindered pattern of violence has triggered desperate, high-pitched appeals from community leaders, who are calling on the federal government and military high commands to establish a permanent defensive buffer in the axis. Confirming the security emergency on Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Sokoto State Command, DSP Ahmad Rufai, stated that the command had successfully intercepted a distress call from the Tureta enclave and had immediately mobilized specialized tactical personnel to the area to restore order.
