Nigeria’s ISWAP leader reportedly rejects leadership role after Mainok’s death

Intelligence reports indicate that senior ISWAP commander Ba’a Shuwa has reportedly declined a leadership role proposed by ISIS following the death of veteran commander Abubakar Mainok during a counterterrorism operation in the Lake Chad region.

Fresh intelligence reports indicate that senior Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) commander, Ba’a Shuwa, has declined to accept a leadership role reportedly proposed by the Islamic State (ISIS) central command following the death of veteran commander Abubakar Mainok, also known as Abu Bilal al-Mainuki. According to security analyst Zagazola Makama, the development followed Mainok’s reported killing during a joint Nigeria-United States counterterrorism operation in the Lake Chad Region Basin Area, an operation said to have significantly disrupted ISWAP’s command structure.

Makama, in a post on his X handle on Monday, said ISIS leadership moved swiftly to address the vacuum created by Mainok’s death by discreetly reaching out to influential figures within ISWAP. Ba’a Shuwa reportedly emerged as one of the preferred candidates for a broader leadership position within the group. However, intelligence assessments cited by Makama indicated that the commander was unwilling to take up the role despite the reported preference of the terrorist organisation’s central leadership.

According to a source familiar with the development, the reluctance may be linked to growing concerns among senior insurgent figures over intelligence-led military operations and precision airstrikes targeting high-value operatives across the Lake Chad region. Mainok was regarded as a key strategist within the organisation, coordinating insurgent activities across Nigeria, Niger, Chad and Cameroon while maintaining links with the wider Islamic State network. His reported death is believed to have created a significant leadership gap within the group.
