Governors seek ₦100,000 minimum wage amid economic reforms

Nigeria’s minimum wage debate is back in the spotlight, with Kwara State Governor and Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, urging President Bola Tinubu to consider raising the national minimum wage from ₦70,000 to ₦100,000.

According to TheCable, AbdulRazaq made the appeal while commending Tinubu’s economic reforms and improved revenue profile across states. He argued that many state governments are now in a stronger financial position, with reduced dependence on borrowing and better fiscal stability.

The governor said a higher wage would better reflect current economic realities and help cushion the impact of rising living costs on Nigerian workers. The proposal is expected to spark fresh discussions among labour unions, state governments and the Federal Government over workers’ welfare and the sustainability of a new wage structure.
