Kenyan police have arrested eight students over a suspected arson attack at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil that killed 16 pupils and injured 79 others.
According to BBC News, investigators used CCTV footage, student interviews and forensic evidence to identify the girls as persons of interest in the deadly dormitory blaze.
Authorities say overcrowding and a locked exit door may have worsened the tragedy. Education Minister Julius Ogamba has dissolved the school’s management board and ordered action against the headteacher.
Emotional scenes unfolded outside the school as anxious parents searched for missing children, while some victims remain hospitalised. The fire has once again reignited concerns about safety standards, overcrowding and repeated deadly boarding school fires in Kenya.
