President Bola Tinubu has awarded a record 1,062 national honours within three years in office, according to findings by The PUNCH. The figure surpasses the total conferred by former President Muhammadu Buhari in eight years and is triple the single major investiture by Goodluck Jonathan in 2014.
The honours span Nigerians and foreign figures, including military officers, democracy activists, sports personalities, and global leaders like Indian PM Narendra Modi and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates.
Major moments include awards to Super Eagles players, slain soldiers, democracy icons like Wole Soyinka and Ken Saro-Wiwa, and posthumous recognitions for national heroes.
The National Honours system, established in 1964, remains the country’s highest official recognition of service, with Tinubu making unprecedented use of it.
