Seven crushed to death as truck runs over car

A devastating multiple-vehicle collision caused by a brake failure at the Elewi-Odo bus stop along the Ojoo expressway in Ibadan has claimed seven lives and left a mother and her twins critically injured.

A horrific traffic accident at the Elewi-Odo bus stop in the Ibadan North East Local Government Area of Oyo State has claimed the lives of seven people and left several others with varying degrees of severe injuries. The fatal multiple-vehicle collision, which occurred on Tuesday as commuters were heading toward the Ojoo end of the expressway, involved two heavy-duty articulated trucks and two Nissan Micra commercial cars. Emergency responders and eyewitnesses at the scene revealed that the tragedy unfolded within seconds when one of the massive trucks suffered a catastrophic mechanical breakdown, directly trapping the smaller commercial vehicles against another truck negotiating a turning layout.

According to a detailed eyewitness account of the crash layout, the disaster began when the lead trailer began slowing down to carefully negotiate a junction leading into its corporate office premises. As the two small Micra cars slowed down sequentially behind it, an incoming trailer approaching rapidly from the rear suddenly lost its brakes on the descent. Unable to decelerate, the massive rear truck forcefully overran the smaller passenger vehicles, crushing them beneath its weight before bringing the entire traffic corridor to a complete standstill. Amidst the twisted wreckage, a local mother and her twin children were pulled out alive by early responders and rushed away for emergency stabilization.

The Oyo State Sector Commandant of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Kehinde Dahunsi, formally confirmed the heavy casualty toll shortly after managing the physical clearance operations on the highway. Dahunsi explained that the impact resulted in immediate fatalities, while the surviving family members were swiftly evacuated to the intensive care units of the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, for advanced medical attention. Providing official closing details on the retrieval mission, the FRSC Sector Commandant explained: “Yes, it was true. I just left the scene of the accident. We went there to carry out the rescue. The accident involved two trailers and two Micra. It was a case of brake failure. One of the trailers was trying to negotiate the turning to his company with Micra behind, but unfortunately, the trailer behind the Micra lost control and ran over them. Seven people died on the spot, and we were able to rescue a woman and her twins. They have been rushed to UCH for medical treatment while the dead bodies have been deposited at Odogbo Cantonment Barrack’s Mortuary.”
