TRAGEDY IN ZAMFARA: Terrorists execute teacher after collecting ransom

Armed bandits in Zamfara State have executed a teacher from the Federal Government College, Anka, despite receiving a ransom from his family, amidst a recurring wave of violent highway ambushes targeting commuters and local government officials across the region.

A wave of grief and anger has enveloped the Maru community and the academic circle of Federal Government College (FGC), Anka, following the tragic murder of a prominent educator, Mustapha Yahaya Maru, by armed bandits in Zamfara State. Maru was intercepted and violently abducted earlier this month while traveling alongside several passengers to his duty post in Anka. Following the abduction, his captors established communication with his family, demanding an exorbitant ransom figure that far exceeded their immediate financial means. Despite the family’s intense back-channel negotiations and successful mobilization of the requested funds through communal contributions, the armed syndicate reneged on their agreement, executing the teacher on Tuesday instead of granting him his hard-earned freedom.

The gruesome execution underscores a catastrophic escalation in recurring highway ambushes orchestrated by armed bandits who continue to operate with near impunity across the northwestern state. Highlighting the volatility of the axis, prominent security analyst Zagazola Makama confirmed that heavily armed assailants had earlier blocked the Tashar Lawali Road near the Jangebe District in the Talata Mafara Local Government Area. In that brazen daylight raid, the gunmen sprayed arriving motorists with automatic gunfire, instantly killing a commercial vehicle driver identified as Lawali Hakimi. The primary target of the blockade appeared to be an official vehicle transporting senior local administrators through the trans-state corridor.

During the chaotic roadside assault, the armed gang aggressively dragged two high-ranking local officials into the deep forest reserves: Jamilu Sani, the Director of Planning for the Talata Mafara Local Government Area, and Muslimu Habibu, a prominent local politician and councillor representing Jangebe Ward. Another passenger, Samaila Ladan, who serves as a registration officer attached to the municipal council’s Hajj Affairs Unit, miraculously survived the onslaught but sustained a severe gunshot wound to his right hand. The continuous bloodshed has triggered widespread condemnation from residents and public workers across Zamfara State, who are urgently demanding that the federal government deploy specialized tactical infantry to flush out the criminal encampments and halt the routine execution of hostages.
