Christians who backed Peter Obi in 2023 have deserted him, they’re now pro-Tinubu – Yilwatda

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, has claimed that Christian communities and South-South voters who backed Peter Obi and the PDP in 2023 have completely abandoned religious sentiments to support President Bola Tinubu.

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, has declared that the Christian communities and South-South voters who heavily supported the Labour Party’s Peter Obi in the 2023 presidential election have completely shifted their allegiance to President Bola Tinubu. Appearing on Channels Television’s flag-ship program, Politics Today, on Monday, May 25, 2026, Yilwatda argued that the ethno-religious and emotional sentiments that heavily polarized the previous general elections have entirely dissolved. The party chairman insisted that structural governance achievements and strategic political realignments over the last three years have successfully integrated former opposition strongholds directly into the ruling party’s fold.

Yilwatda specifically pointed to key North-Central states like Plateau and Nasarawa, pointing out that the local Christian populations which initially rejected the APC’s same-faith ticket are now fully working in tandem with the presidency. To back up his claims of a sweeping national realignment, the ruling party boss contrasted the APC’s present legislative and executive strength against its numerical baseline in 2023. He noted that through successive judicial victories, off-cycle gubernatorial triumphs, and high-profile defection waves, the party has dramatically scaled its influence—growing its presence to an overwhelming majority of over 90 senators in the National Assembly alongside a expanded network of state governors.

The APC national chairman maintained that the South-South geopolitical zone, which had historically functioned as a reliable stronghold for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and later Peter Obi’s “Obidient” movement, has formally transformed into an APC-aligned territory. He emphasized that local leaders and federal lawmakers across the Niger Delta have chosen systemic collaboration over perpetual opposition. “In 2023 how many governors were in APC, how many do we have now? In 2023 how many House of Assembly members did we have? How many do we have now? Then we had over 50 senators now, we have over 90 senators. Some states like Plateau, Nasarawa, and a few other northern states, Christian communities supported Peter Obi in 2023 mainly due to religious sentiment. Are those sentiments still there? The answer is no. Today, they are fully with President Tinubu from the governors to NASS members are with Mr President. The South South was purely with PDP and Obi but Today all of them, the entire South South is now with Tinubu,” Yilwatda stated, signaling absolute confidence in the party’s momentum ahead of the 2027 campaign cycle.
