Nigeria’s Federal Government has banned admissions outside JAMB’s CAPS system, retained the 16-year minimum entry age, and exempted NCE and ND candidates from writing the UTME.
Nigeria’s Federal Government has warned tertiary institutions that admissions conducted outside the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board’s Central Admissions Processing System will be treated as unlawful and face stiff sanctions, including possible suspension of operating licences.
According to Vanguard, Minister of Education Dr Tunji Alausa issued the warning at the 2026 Policy Meeting on Admissions to Tertiary Institutions in Abuja on Monday.
“Admissions conducted outside this framework are illegal and will not be recognised,” Alausa declared, adding: “I have resisted many attempts at condoning illegality in the admissions process. I will not be a party to such actions.”
The government also retained 16 years as the minimum varsity admission age and announced that NCE and National Diploma candidates in agricultural programmes would be exempted from sitting the UTME, though they must still register with JAMB for screening through CAPS.
