Improve service quality now or face sanctions, minister warns MTN, Airtel, others

The Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, has directed telecommunications operators to immediately upgrade their service quality, citing restored profitability and a stable market environment as grounds for strict regulatory enforcement.

Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, has issued a stern directive to telecommunications operators to improve their quality of service or face regulatory consequences. Speaking in a statement on Sunday, the Minister noted that the federal government’s recent reforms have stabilized the sector, allowing providers to return to profitability. “This is important as it means operators now have both the capacity and the resources to fix outstanding issues within their networks and improve the quality of service delivered to Nigerians,” Tijani stated, emphasizing that the era of excuses regarding market instability has ended.

The Minister specifically called out major industry players, including MTN Nigeria, Airtel Nigeria, Globacom, and T2, insisting that the necessary conditions for optimal performance are now in place. He made it clear that the burden of service delivery now rests solely on the providers to meet public expectations. “Let me therefore be clear, the conditions required for improved service delivery have now been established. It is now the responsibility of telecom operators such as MTN Nigeria, Airtel Nigeria, Globacom, and T2 to take all necessary steps to resolve network challenges and deliver the level of service Nigerians expect,” he added.

To ensure compliance, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has been granted full empowerment to monitor the industry and enforce strict service standards. Tijani confirmed that the government will utilize periodic reports and direct public feedback to track improvements in network performance across the country. Warning of a zero-tolerance approach to poor connectivity, the Minister concluded, “Going forward, we expect to see clear and measurable improvements in call quality, data performance, and coverage.”
