The International Committee of the Red Cross has warned that over two million people remain internally displaced across Nigeria’s North East following more than a decade of persistent conflict and violence. ICRC Head of Sub-Delegation in Maiduguri, Dianna Japaridze, made the disclosure during the 2026 World Red Cross Day event in Borno State.
“Over two million people are being internally displaced, and the need for humanitarian assistance has been on the increase,” Japaridze said.
She noted that the ICRC has operated in the region since 2012, delivering healthcare, clean water, agricultural support, and family tracing services across 13 local government areas in collaboration with the Nigerian Red Cross Society.
Marking this year’s theme, “United in Humanity,” Japaridze urged sustained commitment to humanitarian principles, stressing that affected communities are “human beings whose dignity, compassion, and rights must be protected,” not statistics
