Nigeria pushes for unrestricted nuclear access at UN Conference

Nigeria urged the international community at the UN’s NPT Review Conference to guarantee developing countries unrestricted access to peaceful nuclear technology, calling it both a treaty obligation and a development imperative.

Nigeria has called for unrestricted access to nuclear technology for peaceful purposes at the 11th Review Conference of the Non-Proliferation Treaty in New York. Delivering the country’s statement, UN representative Mahmud Lawal argued that developing nations deserve equitable access to nuclear science across health, agriculture, water management, and energy sectors.

“Access to nuclear technology for peaceful purposes must not be subject to undue restrictions. The free exchange of materials, equipment, and scientific knowledge is a treaty obligation and must be upheld,” Lawal stated.

Nigeria also urged enhanced funding for technical cooperation, deeper IAEA collaboration on cancer treatment and energy, and cautioned that emerging technologies like Small Modular Reactors must not disadvantage developing nations.
