Jonathan likely to join 2027 presidential race on Friday

Former President Goodluck Jonathan is expected to formally join the 2027 presidential race as early as Friday, according to sources close to the matter.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan is poised to declare his 2027 presidential ambition as early as Friday, SaharaReporters has learnt from sources privy to the development.

The move follows Jonathan’s response to a group of Nigerian youths who publicly urged him to contest. While stopping short of a firm commitment, he left the door open: “Presidential race is not a computer game. But I’ve heard you, and I’ll consult widely.”

Political observers suggest Jonathan may be joining the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) — the same party recently joined by former Labour Party candidate Peter Obi and ex-Kano Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso following their defection from the ADC.

During his remarks, Jonathan challenged supporters to first obtain their voter cards, lamenting Nigeria’s historically low voter turnout — describing it as the worst he had witnessed across over 14 African countries where he monitored elections.
