Family begs Elumelu to forgive detained teen over false divorce post.
The family of an 18-year-old UTME candidate, Kingsley Akunemeihe, has appealed to Tony Elumelu for forgiveness following his arrest over a false divorce post. His sister said he was detained after resharing the claim online, despite later deleting it and apologising.
“Mr Tony Elumelu got the police to arrest my 18-year-old younger brother,” she said, adding, “He acknowledged he did something wrong and apologised for it.” She urged compassion, saying, “He is just 18… a teenager who acted out of ignorance.”
The United Bank for Africa had earlier described the claim as “false, defamatory, and malicious,” confirming arrests linked to the post.
The case has intensified debates over free speech and online accountability in Nigeria.
