Arsenal on Tuesday secured a historic place in the UEFA Champions League final after defeating Atletico Madrid 1-0 in the semi-final second leg, with Bukayo Saka scoring the decisive goal. The victory ensured the North London club progressed to their first final in Europe’s elite competition since 2006, ending a 20-year wait and marking a significant milestone under manager Mikel Arteta.
According to OptaJoe, the result also saw Arsenal set multiple records, including the longest gap between Champions League final appearances for an English club since Liverpool’s 20-year span in 2005, and one of the longest in the competition’s history since Atletico Madrid’s 40-year gap in 2014. Arsenal also became the only team to remain unbeaten through their first 14 matches in a single Champions League campaign, underlining their dominance throughout the tournament.
The win also brought Arsenal level with their all-time record for most victories in a single season, with 41 wins across all competitions, matching the feat achieved during the 1970–71 campaign. Arteta’s side will now face either Paris Saint-Germain or Bayern Munich in the final as they aim to secure their first-ever Champions League title.
