Rotimi Amaechi has accused President Bola Tinubu of threatening Nigeria’s democracy and warned he could relocate the capital, as opposition leaders rally ahead of the 2027 elections.
Former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi has alleged that President Bola Tinubu would “ruin Abuja” and relocate Nigeria’s capital to Lagos if re-elected in 2027. Amaechi made the claim during the #OccupyINEC protest in Abuja on Wednesday, where opposition figures called for the removal of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)
The protest, organised by the African Democratic Congress, followed internal disputes and leadership derecognition by the electoral body. Prominent politicians, including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rabiu Kwankwaso, attended the rally, insisting the APC must be voted out in the next general elections. Amaechi also accused the government of undermining democracy and attempting to weaken opposition parties.
In response, Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo dismissed the protest as political blackmail, stating that the APC would not be pressured by opposition groups. He argued that Nigeria’s democracy could not be reduced to disputes within a single party, maintaining that the ruling party remained accountable to voters and institutions.
